| LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa.
July 20, 2004 - Air Products (NYSE:APD) hydrogen
fueling technology was placed into use on Monday for the first
time ever at a retail site in Asia as BP Singapore held a
public launch ceremony to officially open its hydrogen filling
station, located in the eastern suburb area of Singapore.
The establishment of this station makes BP the first energy
company in the world to provide the environmentally friendly
fuel at an existing retail site, alongside conventional fuels.
Singapore Environment Minister Lim Swee Say was guest of
honor together with the Chairman of the Singapore National
Environment Agency Prof Simon Tay, Ms Aw Kah Peng, Director
of Economic Development Board, and several other senior
government officials.
BP presented Air Products a Project Safety Award at the
dedication ceremony for the safe and successful commissioning
of the project. "This award is presented to Air Products
for their continual efforts in helping us to meet our Project's
Health, Safety and Environment objectives, and working hand-in-hand
with us through various safety review processes that resulted
in a high level of inherent safety in design, culminating
in a safe and successful commissioning of our hydrogen refueling
facility," said Peter Leong, Hydrogen Project Manager
of BP Asia Pacific.
"This is a landmark demonstration project, and Air
Products is very pleased to be the hydrogen fueling equipment
and technology supplier to BP," said Mark McCann, sales
director for Air Products Singapore. "Hydrogen as an
energy carrier will gain a greater public understanding
through this project, and BP and the Singapore government
are to be applauded for their efforts in establishing this
site."
Air Products' Series 200 fueling technology, a totally
integrated vehicle fueling system, will provide the storage
and dispensing of hydrogen to the vehicles. This Air Products
fueling technology is designed to meet early vehicle fleet
fueling requirements by providing the customer flexibility
of using hydrogen generated on-site, or a distributed hydrogen
supply, integrated with storage and vehicle dispensing capabilities.
The hydrogen fueling facility at Singapore has the capacity
to dispense 70 kilograms of hydrogen per day. Initially,
it will provide fuel for six cars supplied by DaimlerChrysler.
The BP Singapore pilot project, with support from the Economic
Development Board of Singapore, is part of a two-year test
project to evaluate the possible application of hydrogen
fuel cell technology and infrastructure for transport across
the world. The Singapore hydrogen station has been developed
as the inaugural project under the Singapore Initiative
in Energy Technology (SINERGY) program. SINERGY is part
of the government's effort to promote research and development,
and testing activities in the area of clean energy for both
automotive and stationary power applications.
Air Products is an industry leader in hydrogen safety and
engineering, and a global leader in hydrogen production
and distribution, as well as the industry leader in hydrogen
fueling stations for clean transportation applications with
over 30 installations in the United States and internationally.
Recently, in April, it was announced Air Products would
lead a project team in a five-year program funded in part
by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), as part
of its national "Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure
Demonstration and Validation Project".
