Sustainability is at the Core of Air Products' Growth Strategy to Help Solve the World's Energy and Environmental Needs

On Earth Day and every day, our industrial gases and applications expertise enable customers to reduce energy consumption, lower emissions and boost productivity. Air Products’ leadership in gasification, carbon capture, and hydrogen for mobility solutions also put us at the center of one of the greatest global challenges and opportunities today: addressing the world’s need for clean energy and materials while reducing environmental impacts.
Sustainability creates our growth opportunities, and our growth opportunities support our sustainability goals and focus. Everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future, and our employees take that responsibility seriously in collaborating and innovating together, every day.

Sustainable Projects Around the World

Read about some of the projects designed to help Air Products meet the significant energy and productivity needs of our global customers in a more sustainable way.

World's Largest Carbon-free, Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia

Air Products, in conjunction with ACWA Power and NEOM, signed an agreement to build a $5 billion world-scale green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy. The green ammonia production project site is located in NEOM, located in the northwest corner of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The joint venture project will include the innovative integration of over four gigawatts of renewable power from solar, wind and storage; production of 650 tons per day of hydrogen by electrolysis; production of nitrogen by air separation using Air Products’ technology; and the production of 1.2 million tons per year of green ammonia. The project is scheduled to be onstream in 2025. As the exclusive off-taker of the green ammonia, we will invest an additional $2 billion to transport it around the world to be dissociated into what is known as green hydrogen (carbon-free) for use in the transportation market and other industries.

New Liquid Hydrogen Plant in LaPorte, Texas Scheduled to go Onstream in 2021

We have made significant investments to increase hydrogen production in the United States with the newest liquid hydrogen plant at our La Porte, Texas industrial gas facility. Scheduled to go onstream this year, the plant will produce approximately 30 tons of liquid hydrogen per day. It will draw its hydrogen from Air Products’ existing Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline system network. We operate extensive hydrogen pipeline networks around the world, including the nearly 700-mile Gulf Coast Pipeline Network – the world’s largest – connected to more than 20 hydrogen production facilities and with a system capacity of 1.7 billion standard cubic feet per day.

Wind Energy in Poland

Air Products signed a long-term, virtual power purchase agreement in Poland with Scieki onshore wind farm, owned by Macquarie's Green Investment Group. By 2030, Poland is aiming for renewables to make up 23 percent of its power generation, with wind energy making a significant contribution. Demonstrating our ongoing commitment to sustainable business management, the agreement equates to an emissions reduction that is equivalent to removing 8,500 cars each year from Poland's roads.

Capture and Clean CO2 in Spain

Carburos Metálicos, our wholly owned subsidiary in Spain, signed an agreement with ENSO (Bioeléctrica de Garray) to capture and clean CO2 produced by ENSO’s plant in Soria, Spain that uses biomass as fuel. In turn, the plant will provide the power and heat required for Air Products' processes. After being processed, the CO2 will be supplied to our customers who previously received CO2 from a different Air Products facility that was farther away and used a different production technology. This will enable us to avoid the emission of thousands of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere every year, in addition to saving approximately 100,000 kilometers in road transport and the associated emissions.

Unveiling Hydrogen Fueling Station in Ulsan, South Korea

The hydrogen fueling station is the first built and operated by the private sector in the city under the South Korea government’s subsidy program. It is part of Air Products’ ongoing commitment to Ulsan City, which houses the country’s hydrogen industry hub and is one of three pilot cities in the country’s national hydrogen economy roadmap.

Air Products’ Technology for Mozambique’s First Onshore LNG Project

Air Products has signed an agreement to provide our  proprietary LNG technology, equipment and related process license and advisory services to the Mozambique LNG Project. Air Products’ world-leading LNG manufacturing facility in Port Manatee, Florida will manufacture two LNG heat exchangers, which will then be shipped to the project site on the Afungi Peninsula in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. This LNG production facility will be the first onshore LNG Project in the Republic of Mozambique in Southeast Africa.

Air Products' LNG Technology and Equipment for First Phase of Massive Expansion Project in Qatar

We will provide Air Products' proprietary AP-X® Natural Gas Liquefaction Process technology and equipment to Qatargas for the first phase of Qatar Petroleum’s massive LNG production expansion project, commonly known as the North Field East (NFE) Project, in Ras Laffan, the State of Qatar. Each of the four new LNG process units, the largest LNG production trains in the world, will have a production capacity of 7.8 million tonnes per year.  When these mega LNG trains become operational in 2025 liquefying natural gas from Qatar’s North Field, regarded as the largest offshore non-associated natural gas field in the world, Qatar will maintain its position as the world’s number one LNG producer.

Air Products to Supply Four Cryogenic Heat Exchangers to Sonatrach’s LNG Facility in Algeria

Air Products will provide four of our MCR® Main Cryogenic Heat Exchangers (MCHEs) for Sonatrach’s GL1Z LNG facility in Arzew, Algeria. The four heat exchangers will each have 1.3 million tonnes per year production capacity and will replace four previous heat exchangers supplied by Air Products in the late 1970s, which are some of the longest operating MCHEs in the world. The four MCHEs to be supplied will be installed at the heart of the proprietary AP-C3MR™ propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant liquefaction process at the multi-train facility.  The new exchangers will incorporate the latest advances in design and manufacture which have been developed by Air Products over the past four decades.
